The term FRAMING refers to how you compose your shots:
Places are often in fierce competition to attract visitors and customers. Therefore, your pictures should always clearly repeat the business name and not just show some random detail.
Images uploaded in portrait format will be auto-cropped to fit the much wider formats. This can ruin your shots. Such randomly amputated images will represent the places poorly and inadequately.
To prevent this problem you first need to know what cropping is.
Removing parts along the edges of an image is called cropping.
Reasons for cropping include:
To crop intelligently you need to know what is important in your shots. Unfortunately, Google's auto-crop routines are not very intelligent!
There is a smart way to block Google's auto-crop routines from wrecking your photos.
All you need to do is follow the Framing Rules and later crop your pictures manually to look good in the wider format. If you also make sure the storefronts are centered in your wider crops, then Google's not-so-smart auto-crop routines can crop to the square formats without destroying your work.
Follow the 3 Framing Rules is the first step in fixing this problem. If you also follow the cropping guidelines presented in module Ⓑ⓷ Cropping your images will always look great and represent the places perfectly in all formats and situations.
